Cork TD calling for Government to remove shipwrecked MV Alta from Ballycotton Coast

The cargo ship washed up on rocks in Ballycotton in February 2020 after it was abandoned by its crew off the coast of Bermuda in September 2018

Deputy Pat Buckley says Cork County Council have spent around 200,000 euro making the ship environmentally safe, however he says he has grave concerns about the ship staying in place due a recent fire and video footage of people exploring the wreck.

Speaking to RedFM News, TD Pat Buckley says the shipwreck is unsafe and should be removed:

That attraction will turn into, possibly a bit of an environmental disaster. I mean, it's a beautiful coastline, a lot of activities going there between fishing and that cost to walk, and you know it just needs to be gone, Cork county council kind of spent in the range of 200,000, making the ship as safe, environmentally, as it could be by removing all the oil and oil barrels. We're trying to get to the bottom of it because we don't know who owns it. We are being told that it's the Government and Cork County Council's responsibility."
