Cork's heroin problem to be discussed
Cork city's growing heroin problem will be discussed later today. Representatives from the HSE, gardai, the city council and the Cork Local Drugs Task Force will come together to find a way to tackle the problem. At a previous Joint Policing Committee, Chief Superintendent Michael Finn said that heroin was a reality here and it needed to be addressed. He said it was important to join forces with all the relevant organisations to tackle the problem as it was no good just charging someone for possession when treatment was needed. The Chief Superintendent also made a direct link between use of the drug and a rise in thefts in the city as addicts try to feed their habit. Gardai have seen an increase in the number of people being robbed of personal belongings such as bags, wallets and phones. This afternoon's meeting is taking place in the Clarion Hotel.
