County Mayor pledges to carry out study of derelict buildings after overnight fire guts St Kevin's asylum

The County Mayor says he will be asking Cork County Council to carry out a study on the current situation of vacant buildings in the county. 

It comes after one of Cork's most iconic buildings was gutted by a blaze overnight.

The alarm was raised shortly after 8 o'clock last night when smoke was seen billowing from St Kevin's Asylum on the Lee Road. 

An investigation into the cause of the fire has since been launched.

Concern has been expressed about the number of fires which have destroyed a number of historic properties in Cork including Vernon Mount House and Good Shepherd Convent.
