Crew of ship detained in West Cork return home to Indonesia

Its after they requested Irish officials to assist them in returning home.

The vessel has been subject to an examination by Britain's Marine and Coastguard Agency after it was detained by Irish authorities who raised a number of concerns over the conditions of the trawler.

The Christian M, crewed by mainly Indonesian fishermen was towed into Castletownbere after it broke down last week.

It was then detained by the Irish Marine Survey Office who detained the vessel in the Beara peninsula port after finding a number of discrepancies on board including a cockroach infestation as well as crewing issues.

According to a report in the Irish Examiner the ship has been fumigated twice and is free from infestation but will not be allowed sail until issues of accommodation and training for crew members are adequately met.

Meanwhile the Indonesian crew members with the assistance of the Indonesian embassy left the boat yesterday to return home.

The International Transport Workers is demanding the owner of the UK vessel to pay any outstanding monies owed to the fishermen as well as the cost of airfares for the journey home.
