CUH nurse placed off duty after speaking out about concerns

A mental health nurse who spoke out about his concerns regarding a new psychiatric unit in the CUH has been placed off duty. Des McSweeney, who is a psychiatric nurse in South Lee Mental Health Services, went public about the dispute on the Neil Prendeville Show over the new €15m acute psychiatric unit which psychiatric nurses have refused to transfer to over concerns about staffing levels and layout. He says he's now been placed off duty with pay for acting in a manner inconsistent with HSE policies and procedures relating to communications particularly with the media. Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show, Des says while his future is uncertain the situation is not about him and he spoke out so that patients won't suffer because of what he believes will be an inadequate facility.
