"Debenhams Bill" to be tabled by Cork TD

A bill aimed at improving the rights of workers when the company they work for goes into liquidation will be debated and voted on in the Dail today.

The so-called Debenhams bill is being tabled by Cork TD Mick Barry and aims to put employees at the front of the queue when it comes to payouts from a liquidator and to make unpaid collective agreements a debt in the eyes of the law.

Debenhams workers have been picketing stores since they were laid off on April 9th, last year.

They are demanding the UK company honour a 2016 agreement with their union Mandate that they would receive two weeks’ pay per year of service in addition to two weeks’ statutory redundancy.
