Debenhams Workers Disappointed That The Social Protection Minister Can't Get Involved In The Liquidation Process

The sudden closure of the Irish stores will leave 330 workers across Debenham's two Cork stores without jobs

Debenhams workers in Cork have described as "disappointing" the refusal of the Social Protection Minister to get involved in the liquidation of the firm's Irish stores

The sudden closure, which will leave 330 workers across Debenhams two Cork stores without jobs, has led to staff mounting a number of protests as fears rise about their redundancy payouts

Minister Regina Doherty's confirmation that she is legally prevented from getting involved has led to calls for the Public Accounts Committee to examine the retailers' books now that the state faces the redundancy bill for the company's Irish workforce

Workers are fighting for a fair redundancy package which saw some of them block the removal of assets from Debenhams Patrick Street store on Tuesday as part of their official strike action

Speaking to RedFM News Debenhams shop steward Valerie Conlon says they'll continue to fight for a better redundancy package
