Decision to route proposed Lee2Sea Greenway along Rochestown Road has angered residents

Some locals wanted the route to run alongside the Douglas Estuary rather that along the road, which they believe poses a safety risk to walkers and cyclists using the Greenway.

Other residents, whose gardens back onto the estuary opposed the estuary route on security grounds.

It comes as Gardaí say they will work to identify the author of a submission proposing the re-routing of the greenway upgrade in front rather than behind these homes after it emerged that it was allegedly written by a Garda in the area

Dave Farrell who lives in Douglas and runs a local business in the area, is a regular user of the greenway and he told RedFM News that his preferred option would be along the estuary on safety grounds:

"You have arguably one of most beautiful parts of Cork Harbour- unspoiled, really. And one of the photographs I saw proposed was a boardwalk that would run 10 metres away from the end of the houses, and it just looked like it could become a real jewel in the crown of the city, and a fantastic family and tourism amenity."

Lana O'Connor RedFM News: "You're obviously aware that residents have their own safety concerns about that in relation to security of their homes?"

Dave Farrell: "Absolutely, and I totally respect that. It's just, I think if people were brought on the table and there was some due care and creativity brought to the table, that there could be a nice compromise brought."
