Douglas Traders Say They Are Experiencing Decrease In Footfall Following Car Park Blaze

The fire caused significant damage to Douglas Village Shopping Centre at the weekend.

Management say the shopping centre will need to be partially demolished due to the fire, which engineers say weakened the structural integrity of the multi-storey car park.

Demolition work is due to start next week.

Around 60 cars were damaged in the fire, while 130 remain trapped on the upper floors of the shopping centre. They will have to be removed with a crane in the coming days as the floors and the access ramps were compromised in the fire.

Meanwhile shops located in the centre are all closed and their future remains unknown at this point, as management at the shopping centre say it's impossible to tell when the centre will be able to reopen.

Gardaí say they're satisfied the blaze which originated in one car before spreading to others was not suspicious and started accidentally.

John is a taxi driver based in Douglas and he told RedFM News the closure of the centre will have a devastating impact on the area:
