Fears have been expressed that Vernon Mount House faces demolition after a blaze gutted its internal floors and roof.

Fears have been expressed that one of Cork's historic buildings faces demolition after a blaze gutted its internal floors and roof.

The alarm was raised when flames and smoke were seen billowing from Vernon Mount House shortly after half nine on Sunday night.

It took seven units of the fire brigade ten hours to bring the fire under control.

Gardaí have since appealed for witnesses.

In the wake of criticism on inaction on Vernon Mount House, Cork County Council says they paid for work to be carried out on the roof in 2012 and 2014 

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM Peter Murray, Director at the Crawford Art Gallery says he believes if adequate resources had been made available Vernon Mount House could have been saved:
