Free GP care for those aged over 70 goes live today

The new measure applies to nearly 40,000 people

Free GP care for those aged over 70 has gone live today.

The new measure applies to nearly 40,000 people who don't have a medical or GP visit card.

It's the next step towards the Government's plans for universal healthcare and follows the roll-out of free GP care for the under-sixes last month.

The scheme's expected to cost between 18 and 20 million euro a year.
