Gardai in Cork are mounting checkpoints across the city and county this bank holiday weekend.
A recent report from the Road Safety Authority has shown that Cork has the highest number of road fatalities in Ireland so far this year.
17 people have lost their lives on Cork roads, and Gardai are urging motorists to stay safe, slow down, wear their seatbelts and to avoid distraction.
It's estimated 1 in 5 fatal road collisions in Ireland is due to driver fatigue.
Meanwhile 543 people have been arrested on suspicion of drink driving around the country since the start of July, and Gardai are appealing to the public to never drink and drive.
Speaking to RedFM News Inspector Finbarr O' Sullivan says people should consider the penalties and consequences of drinking and driving.
