Gardaí Rule Out Foul Play In Death Of Cork Pensioner After House Fire

Garda have ruled out foul play in the death of a pensioner in a house fire in the city after a technical examination confirmed that the fire started accidentally in the kitchen area.

Mary Moynihan died in the blaze which broke out at her house at Laurel Wood on the Model Farm Road in the city's western suburbs around 9pm on Monday night.

The alarm was raised when  the 89-year-old's carer called to the house at around 9.20pm to assist the elderly woman in going to bed and she discovered a fire in the kitchen area.

Garda technical experts examined the house and were satisfied the blaze began in the kitchen where an open fire was burning and they were satisfied that it began accidentally.

Gardai have established the 89-year-old was alive earlier in the evening when her nephew called to check on her and a file on her death will now be prepared for an inquest at the coroner's court
