Gas Supply Project Being Pioneered By Port Of Cork And American Firm
It's hoped the country's power supply will be secured for the coming decades with a gas supply project which is being pioneered by the Port of Cork and an American firm.
The Irish Examiner reports that Texas-based company Nextdecade and the port authority are behind the plan to install a new jetty in Whitegate to berth a massive container ship storing liquid nitrogen gas (LNG), which will then be converted into vaporous gas and pumped into the national grid.
The aim of the project is to supply the power stations in Aghada operated by Bord Gáis and the ESB which would secure Ireland's gas supply regardless of what happens politically elsewhere.
Currently the gas used in Ireland comes from Scotland, via Russia.
It's hoped the plan will progress next month when the American company visits Cork.
