Government must invest in Cork creches to prevent closure

A €50,000 investment from the Government would save a Cork Creche from closure.

That's according to Managment at the Ballyphehane Childcare Centre, who is one of seven creches across the city who may be forced to close it's doors because of changes to legislation.

Under new government regulations community employment workers must be replaced by qualified childcare workers at a cost of €24,000 each.

The creches in Togher, Ballypheahane, Shandon, Mayfield, Ballyvolane, Mahon and Churchfield, say they do not have the funds available to do this, and could have to close in September.

Some of the most disadvantaged children under the ages of three, may lose their early intervention services as a result.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM Manager at the Ballyphehane Childcare Centre Bernie Buckley says the Government must find the funds to keep the creches open:
