Graduated speeding fines already agreed by Cabinet will not be introduced as planned
The penalties which would be altered, based on how much a motorist is over the speed limit, have been scrapped for now
The Department of Transport is instead focusing on the introduction of variable speed limits on motorways.
Transport Minister Eamon Ryan says new road traffic legislation due before Cabinet next month will pave the way for changeable limits for the first time.
"I don't want to be introducing two different variable speed limits and variable fines at the same time, it's Safety First and foremost, and my priority is getting those variable and lower speed limits in as a way of saving lives, which is the first priority"
