Hike in points requirements as first round offers released

First round offers are being made to 52,000 CAO applicants today.

Around 45% of courses have seen their points jump from last year's level, while the number of courses requiring 500 or more points has increased by more than a quarter.
Business and engineering courses have been pushed up by a rise in demand, while the popularity of many science courses has also driven up their levels.
Successful candidates will now have to decide whether to accept their offer before next Monday's deadline.
President of the Union of Students in Ireland Kevin Donoghue says those who don't get their first choice shouldn't give up:
