Hopes To Restore Flights Between Cork and Dublin
It is hoped that flights between Cork and Dublin will be reinstated. It comes amid reports that talks aimed at reopening the route are ongoing between Cork airport, airlines and the Cork Chamber. Airlines capable of operating a regular Cork to Dublin route have been canvassed in an attempt to determine their level of interest. Officials at the airport now believe that in order for the service to return state support or financial assistance from the tourism and business communites would be essential. The route faces operational costs including fuel, flight staff, and air traffic control costs. A decrease in passenger numbers as a result of improvements to the motorway is also an issue. Chief Executive of the Cork Chamber has however confirmed that talks are ongoing with the airport and Aer Arann on the possible return of the route. Ryanair was the last airline to operate on the Cork to Dublin route but operations ceased in 2011.
