Housing System reduces refusal rates of Social Housing

A pilot system to allocate social housing which was rolled out by six City Councils including Cork City, has been shown to reduce the refusal rate dramatically.
Choice-based letting involves local authorities offering properties to people on the housing list, who then have an opportunity to bid on the property.
In Cork, the refusal rate fell from about 50% to 10% after the change in the rules, and as a result of that success the scheme is now being rolled out across the country this Autumn.
Cluid Housing provides homes to people on waiting lists, and currently has over 5-thousand tenancies around the country.
Spokesman Simon Brooks, says the system won't necessarily take large numbers of people off the waiting list, but it will make better use of the existing housing stock;
