Increase in the number of inmates in Cork prison availing of methadone programmes

There's been an increase in the number of inmates in Cork prison availing of methadone programmes.

The Echo reports that the figures have been increasing since 2015.

According to the Irish Prison Service  257 inmates received methadone treatment for heroin addiction in the past year, that's up 77 on 2017 figures. 

The Irish Prison Service says those who are engaged in methadone treatment before committal to prison, mainly have their treatment continued. 

It comes following concern about the availability of heroin on the streets of Cork with sighting of heroin paraphernalia in broad daylight being reported, however Gardaí say efforts are being made to combat the availability of the drug. 

Last month Gardaí seized €350,000 worth of heroin when they stopped a man his 30s after he got off a bus in the city centre.
