Ireland's economy set to bounce back following the pandemic

Ireland's economy is likely to bounce back after the pandemic, but the government needs to set out a credible medium term strategy.
That's according to the government's budget watchdog, which says our budgetary forecasts are poorly founded, while major policy commitments aren't built in.
Sebastian Barnes - Chair of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council - says the government needs to look past Covid.
"The economy should bounce back. Things should get better.
"Then after that we need to start planning for the future, and we think that fiscal environment is going to be quite difficult. There are big pressures from the ageing of the population, putting up pension costs. Climate change, there's likely to be a lot of money needed. We know about corporation tax, and the risks that we lose a chunk of that in the years ahead are much higher than they were.
"So this is an environment where the government really needs to plan."
