Irish Residents Going To USA For Gender Re-Assignment Surgery Since Pandemic

The procedures aren't available here, but patients can get them done abroad, at the HSE's expense
But that involves a long wait, and many choose to spend over 10,000 euro on private treatment.
Dr Sidhbh Gallagher specialises in gender re-assignment surgery at her practice in Florida - she deals with several Irish clients:
"I have had some patients from Ireland, even in the pandemic, fly over for their care. And it's possible to do it but obviously it's a huge burden on the patient financially to have to do that. And in those cases, those particular patients I don't think we're covered on the Treat Abroad Scheme, because there were folks who had the means to do it and didn't want to deal with the waitlist."
