Low staffing levels highlighted at Prison Service Annual Conference

Staffing levels at Cork Prison are under the spotlight once again.
The issue was raised at the Prison Officers Association Annual Conference in Galway today, as calls were made for intensive recruitment in order to avoid a looming staff crisis at the new prison.
Six staff members at the prison retired last week, and a further 48 are eligabile to retire this year.
117 officers are required to run the prison, but figures from the Irish Prison Service show there are currently just 113 prison officers available.
Speaking to RedFM news Deputy General Secretary of the Prison Officers Association Jim Mitchell says current recruitment is not keeping pace with retirements:
