Man (60s) Among 3 People Rescued By Local RNLI Volunteers In Cork Yesterday
He had fallen off a cliff while out walking along the coast yesterday morning.
The volunteer Kinsale crew had been out on a routine training exercise off Garrettstown beach, when they spotted a man struggling against the rocks, near the Old Head of Kinsale.
The Coastguard Helicopter RNLI was alerted and the man was winched to safety, and taken for medical treatment.
Two other people were also rescued off the Cork coast yesterday. A woman became ill on board an angling boat near the Dursey Sound, while a man was rescued after getting into difficulty, on a small inflatable RIB boat near the Sovereign Islands.
John Hynes from Kinsale RNLI assisted in the first rescue and says the middle aged man was extremely lucky they got to him when they did:
"At this point, it remains a bit uncertain how much time he had spent in the water. It appears that he would have clambered to the rocks but at that point he was extremely cold and hypothermic and a very low on energy. So at that point he did not have much time as the tide had begun to flood. So time was of the essence and that's why we proceeded to move quickly to request the assistance of Rescue 115."
