Man's death in Cork city "suspicious"

Gardai investigating the death of a 36-year old man who was assaulted in the city have appealed to the public for assistance in trying to identify his assailant. Keith Flanagan originally from Luttrell Park in Carpenterstown, Dublin 15 had travelled to Cork on Thursday last before he became involved in a row with another person on Patrick's Quay. Gardai believe that Keith Flanagan, who had been living in hostel accommodation in Dublin, was assaulted sometime around 10pm on Thursday at the Patrick's Bridge end of Patrick's Quay. He was found in a collapsed state on the quay and rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for a brain injury. However, he failed to regain consciousness and died at CUH at around 2am on Saturday. Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster, carried out a post-mortem on his body but gardai have not released the findings for operational reasons. However, they have confirmed that they're satisfied that Mr Flanagan had been the victim of an assault and they are treating his death as suspicious. Gardai are appealing to witnesses to the row on Patrick's Quay to contact Mayfield Garda Station on 021 4522000.
