Midnight meeting at City Hall in bid to prevent merger

Councillors will be asked to vote on challenging the legality of the proposed merger of Cork City and County Councils.

An urgent Cork City Council meeting is taking place at one minute past midnight tonight where councillors will be asked to vote on challenging the legality of the proposed merger of Cork City and County Councils.

City councillors are to be briefed on legal advice sought on taking an injunction to block Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly pressing ahead with the merger.

If two-thirds of the councillors give their backing Chief Executive Ann Doherty will be directed to initiate legal proceedings.

The recommendation by three out of five members of the Cork Local Government Review Group to amalgamate the councils has received a mixed reaction.

In an open letter issued over the weekend the Lord Mayor refered to the merger as act of political vandalism.

Elsewhere Cork County Council Chief Executive Tim Lucey has today waned of the threats to foreign investment of blocking the merger.

Speaking to RedFM News Lord Mayor Cllr Chris O'Leary says if the council members back the challenge tonight they'll be contacting the Taoiseach immediately:
