Minister Considering Paying Equality Tribunal Fine From Own Pocket

Minister John Halligan is considering paying an equality tribunal fine from his own pocket after asking a civil servant if she was married during an interview.

The woman was yesterday awarded 7,500 euro but today the political pressure has built for the Minister to pay the fine instead of the taxpayer.

The Tanaiste ruled out any prospect of an appeal in the Dail earlier saying she accepted the ruling and was disappointed in the Minister.

However Frances Fitzgerald says she accepts John Halligan's apology.
