Missing persons legislation introduced by a Cork Senator five years ago will come into operation tomorrow
The Civil Law Presumption of Death Act was first introduced by Senator Colm Burke in 2014 and has been welcomed by the National Missing Persons Helpline.
In cases where it is 'virtually certain' a person is dead family members will now be able to make an application for a presumption of death within 12 months.
Up until now, the law meant a person would have to wait up to seven years before such an action could be taken.
Speaking to RedFM News Dermot Brown of the National Missing Persons Helpline says the new legislation will relieve some of the emotional burden for families:
