New Rules For Playgrounds In Cork

Only adults accompanying children 12 years of age or younger will be allowed into playgrounds in Cork as part of an attempt to prevent paedophiles hanging around such amenities. This rule will be part of new byelaws which the local authority hopes to introduce next year. Under the new rules, it will prohibited for anybody ‘unless part of a visiting family unit’ from operating a camera, camera phone, or any other recording device in playgrounds and skateboard parks in the county. The council has also decided to prohibit a number of other activities including smoking in these recreational spaces. Council officials say the bylaws will be policed by the gardaí and their own authorised staff and they also expect that local communities will have an input. The rules will be first rolled out in North Cork as a pilot project and then become the norm throughout the rest of the county during 2014.
