New scheme to tackle crime as burglaries increase Leeside

It's hoped a new pilot scheme being rolled out will help to tackle criminal gangs and burglars who are using the motorway  to make speedy getaways.

Environment Minister Alan Kelly has announced €50,000 will be allocated to the scheme which will see CCTV cameras installed in strategic positions in remote locations with the aim of deterring criminal behaviour.

It comes after a senior garda in Cork recently revealed criminal gangs are travelling Leeside to carry out burglaries and due to the increased resources to curb the problem in the city, rural areas are now being targeted.

Recent figures show there's been a 54% increase in break-ins in the city last year - and yesterday RedFM highlighted the plight of a pensioner from Blackrock whose savings for new radiators were stolen from his home.
