Number of speeding fines increase
Almost 24,000 speeding fines were paid by drivers in Cork over the last two years.
Motorists in Cork West paid the most fines in 2018 at 4,694 while Cork North motorists paid the most last year at 4,353 fines.
Drivers in the city settled 3,639 fines in 2019, an increase of 844 compared to the previous year.
According to freedom of information figures, just over 110,000 penalties were settled in 2018 – coming to €9.6 million.
And last year almost 120,000 speeding fines were paid – with the Gardai collecting over €10.5 million.
Aisling Reid, from the Parc Road Safety Group, says these drivers are putting lives at risk.
"It's very concern to us as members of Parc, the increase in speeding drivers on our roads, as many of our members have lost family members to speed on the roads.
"Speed is a factor in up to a third in road fatalities every year, so the message really needs to be gotten out there - if you speed you can cause serious harm or fatalities on the road."
