OPW & Opposition Groups Given Ultimatum on Food Defence

The OPW and Save Cork City group have been told to reach agreement on the flood defences for the city or risk losing the Government funding.

The warning was issued by Oireacthas Committee member Danny Healy Rae who was speaking as the two groups appeared before the Heritage & Gaeltacht committee yesterday.

The OPW's plan would see flood defences that include extensive quay walls along the River Lee but there has been some opposition to this with groups such as Save Cork City recommending the installation of a tidal barrier at a cost of €140 million.

However the OPW says the barrier would not protect the city from fluvial flooding.

Danny Healy Rae urged the two groups to settle their differences or face the Government money being assigned elsewhere.

Speaking to RedFM News Ezra MacManamon of the OPW says it will take some time yet before the flood relief plan is finalised as they are working through 1500 submissions made to their office:
