Over 1,000 Women Waiting For Gynaecological Operations At Cork University Maternity Hospital

The figures to June 7th are an increase of around 500 cases since May last year.

Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology John R. Higgins says he has serious concerns relating to the "growing risk to women" on the list and said there is a risk of cancers or serious conditions developing due to the long waiting period for surgery.

The Echo reports that Professor Higgins is calling for funding to open an idle operating theatre at CUMH, which he says would help tackle the surgical waiting list.
