Over 1,600 Cars Have Been Seized From Unaccompanied Learner Drivers So Far This Year

The Clancy Amendment came into effect in December 2018 and gave Gardaí the power to impound vehicles and fine the owners. 

The amendment is named after mother and daughter Geraldine and Louise Clancy from Kilworth in North Cork who died after their car was struck by an unaccompanied learner driver in December 2015.

The figures come as the Road Safety Authority launch a new campaign to encourage people to sit their test and get a full licence.

Over 40 thousand drivers are currently on the roads on their fourth or more learner permit.

RSA Chief Executive Moyagh Murdock says there's a misconception that it's young drivers who aren't taking their test:
