Pensioner Stages Sit-In At Youghal Clock Gate Tower

John McGrath wants permission to display a family photo complete with a crest in the clock gate tower where he was born

Friends of a pensioner who staged a sit-in at Youghal Clock gate Tower yesterday are hopeful that a resolution can be found to allow him display a family photo complete with a crest in the clock gate tower where he was born.

80 year old John McGrath, said he felt he had no option but to occupy the iconic building, for six and a half hours yesterday, after the County Council refused him  permission to display the montage and family crest in the building his family lived in for half a century.

Three generations of the McGrath family lived as tenants in the tower from 1915 until 1955. The building is now owned by the county council, and has been restored and opened as a visitor attraction in March 2017. The McGrath family living room is replicated inside.

The Irish Examiner reporters that John McGrath is hugely upset at the Council's refusal to allow him display the family photo over the mantlepiece and he has rejected an offer to display the photo without the crest
