Pirate TV operation dismantled in Cork

A pirate TV operation which is estimated to cost around €20 million a year in lost revenue, has been dismantled in Cork.

It's suspected an organised gang sells set top boxes to receive tv channels, without having to sign up to a service provider.

Gardai estimate that 20,000 people nationwide are using illegal set top boxes and as a result the two main service providers are losing out on around €20m a year.

Today up to 40 gardai from the Economic Crime Investigation Unit carried out 7 searches at premises in the Cork Region with representatives from Virgin Media, Sky TV and Nagra also involved.

A significant amount of electronic equipment and documentation of evidential value was seized.

No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
