Plans to permanently abandon disused Midleton to Youghal railway line.
Iarnrod Eireann are planning to permanently abandon the disused rail line from Midleton to Youghal.
According to the Evening Echo, the disused line is one of 10 closed railway lines across the country that the company want to permanently close.
The company claims the costs of maintaining old rail lines is €3 million euro per year, as bridges, drains, fences and level crossings all need to be maintained.
When the Cork to Midleton passenger rail line reopened in 2009, there were calls for it to be extended to Youghal, but the project never took off.
If Irish Rail secured a permanent closure, it would end any prospect of it reopening in the future.
