Pre-school services in danger of closure

Childcare workers across Cork have painted a stark picture in relation to the provision of pre-school services in the city.

They've highlighted the imminent closure of up to seven creches Leeside, due to changes in Government legislation which means Community Employment workers can no longer be used in community creches.

Creches now must employ fully qualified staff at a cost of €24,000 per staff member, and many say they do not have sufficient funds for this, and may have to close their doors.

SIPTU is now are calling on all Early Years educators to join in the "Big Start "Campaign, which is lobbying the Government for increased investment in the sector.
