Cork Project Aimed At Tackling High Traveller Suicide Rates Proving Effective

The project was established after it emerged that traveller suicide rates are six times higher than in the settled community

That's according to the Cork North Community Work Department which is involved in the initiative after a survey found that traveller suicide rates are six times higher than in the settled community.

There are an estimated 600 traveller families living in Cork city and surrounding areas and suicide was identified as most common in young Traveller men aged 15-25..

An All Ireland Traveller Health Study revealed that Traveller Men believe suicide is destroying their community yet they don't speak about these taboo issues..

Eleanor Moore of the Cork North Community Work Department told RedFM News says since the launch of the project they have seen a drop in suicide rates among travellers living in the city
