Prominent Economist Says Taxes Should Be Raised To Pay For Planned Government Spending Increases

The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council told the Oireachtas budgetary committee that the government’s spending plan for the next few years is unrealistic

Council chair Sebastian Barnes says big spending increases are envisaged, which will have to be paid for:

"If you're planning to improve the quality of public services and spend more money on them, it's not unnatural that taxes would have to rise to balance that. It wouldn't particularly depress the economy because you're putting more money in moving money from one place to the other. It's really just about making sure that the both sides of the equation balance out."
