Protest Staged In East Cork Over Planned Mogeely Cheese Plant
Dairygold plans to pump up to 4 million litres of waste a day into the water
Protestors say plans to pump 4 million litres of waste from a newly built cheese plant into Cork harbour will have a devastating impact on the area.
The Save Cork Harbour group held a demonstration earlier to highlight Dairygold's plans to pump industrial waste 14 kilometres from their plant in Mogeely to the sea at East Ferry.
Dairygold say the waste will be carried away and will not pose a problem in the harbour, however a study by NUI Galway contradicted that finding.
The pipline from Mogeely to East Ferry is nearing completion, however the EPA are yet to grant Dairygold a licence to pump the waste into the harbour
Speaking to RedFM News, Debbie Hayes from Save Cork Harbour say the tides and prevailing winds prevent anything pumped into the harbour from being carried out to sea:
