Smoky coal ban to be expanded to Cork county

The ban was extended to Cork city in 1995 and is currently in force in 26 urban areas

The Minister for the Environment has announced a nationwide extension of the ban on smoky coal.

It was introduced in Dublin 25 years ago and Minister Alan Kelly says there have been significant health benefits.

Here in Cork - the ban was extended to the city in 1995 and is currently in force in 26 urban areas, including all towns with a population greater than 15,000. Researchers have estimated 8,200 lives have been saved as a result.

This announcement by the Minister means that residents in Cork county will no longer be able to burn smoky coal

Minister Kelly expects that it will take at least a year to introduce the nationwide ban but says it will be in place by the 2018 heating season
