Soldier With Perfect Record Jailed For Taking Part In 'Outrageous' Unprovoked City Centre Assault

24 year old Eric Dorgan of Fairfield Cresent, Farranree was handed an 18 month sentence at this mornings sitting of Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
Eric Dorgan was on a night out in the city with Shane Galgey of St Anthony's Road in Gurranabraher on November 30th 2019.
The pair were on Winthrop Street when Galgey approached three men and asked what they were saying about him.
One of the three men was punched in the face by Galgey and another was assaulted. The third man was chased away.
Eric Dorgan became involved in the unprovoked assault at this point and kicked one of the men in the head while he was on the ground.
Both accused pled guilty to two charges each and said they were profoundly sorry for the attack which left one man with a fractured eye socket and the other with a severe head wound.
Judge Seán Ó Donnabhain noted that Dorgan would lose his job in the army but said there was no reality of a suspended sentence due to the level of violence and the injuries inflicted on the two victims.
He remanded Shane Galgey on bail for sentencing on February 26th next year and said he could not give any guarantees about a suspended sentence.
