Speed limits could be introduced in 1,000 housing estates in the county

The County Council is considering the introduction of 30kph speed limits in more than 1,000 residential estates. It comes after the mother of a six-year-old boy who died after being struck by a car outside his home in Kilkenny spearheaded a campaign to have speed limits reduced in housing estates. Roseanne Brennan's son Jake died in a fatal road crash outside his family home four months ago and since then she's been appealing for a 30 kph limit in estates, but currently only Councils have the power to set limits. Now Cork County Council is to prioritise 40 estates for the restrictions where children and other pedestrians are most at risk. Eight of the municipal districts are to select five estates for an immediate implementation of the plan, which could in the long term affect 1,031 housing estates in the county.
