Tánaiste: Directly Elected Mayor In The City Would Be One Of The Most Powerful Politicians In Ireland

Simon Coveney was speaking ahead of next Friday's plebiscite vote to decide whether people want a directly elected mayor in the City

The mayor will earn the same salary as a junior minister - around 130 thousand euro - and will also have powers to set the local budget and devise a development plan for the area.

All the major political parties support the plan, however some councillors, including the current Lord Mayor say the idea is unworkable.
