Teachers across Cork say new language plans by Minister are currently unworkable
Teachers across Cork say the Minister for Education's new plan to prioritise the teaching of foreign languages is currently unworkable.
TUI members voiced their concerns about the new initiative at their annual conference in the Clayton Silversprings Hotel, saying they do not have enough teachers to teach core subjects as it is.
Schools are unable to recruit teachers for subjects such as Irish and Home Economics, as many newly qualified teachers are moving abroad for better pay and conditions.
The ambitious new initiative announced by Minister Richard Bruton, will see all pupils studying foreign languages such as Chinese, Polish Lithuanian and Portuguese for their Leaving Cert by 2021.
Speaking to RedFM News Cork Teacher Tony Rosborough says the recruitment issue must be taken into account before this plan is implemented:
