The Social Democrats Have Called For The De-Funding Of The Greyhound Industry By 2025

The party has brought a motion calling for a planned increase in state funding to the industry to be set aside
Instead it wants that money diverted to animal welfare groups.
It comes after a documentary last year looking at the treatment of the dogs, with thousands believed to be culled every year.
In the wake of the programme the Irish Greyhound Board introduced a number of measures to improve the health and safety of the dogs involved
A number of peaceful protests were staged at Curraheen Park by Greyhound Awareness Cork calling for an outright ban on greyhound racing in Ireland
Cork Social Democrats TD Holly Cairns has said taking away state funding would ultimately close the greyhound racing industry:
