University College Cork Scraps Plans To Increase Student Capitation Fee

University College Cork has scrapped plans to increase the student capitation fee.

The fee covers membership of the Union of Students of Ireland and the Mardyke Sports Arena and was due to rise to €370 by 2023.

UCC says the €250 fee for the 2019/2020 term is not covered by the Higher Education Grant Scheme and is needed to cover the increasing cost of student services.

The UCC Students Union threatened legal action and said the University, which will be refunding students who paid the first  installment, could only increase the fee through a referendum.
