Urgent Structural Assessments To Be Conducted At 5 Cork Schools Built In The last decade

The Department of Education says the checks will be carried out on building projects completed by Western Building Systems.
It comes after Ardgillan Community College in Balbriggan had to close a building and send 200 transition year students home for a week as it was deemed too dangerous to use.
The schools in Cork where the assessments will be conducted include Cara Junior school in Mayfield, Scoil Phadraig Naofa Rochestown, Carrigaline Educate Together National School, Gaelschoil Mhichil Ui Choileáin and Macroom Boys National School.
Fire safety assessments conducted in these schools over the past 12 months have uncovered some breaches although in some cases the issues uncovered have been described as minor by the Education Department.
CEO of Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board, Paddy Lavelle, says an engineer discovered the issues at Ardgillan Community College during a fire safety assessment:
