Water charges Leeside are back in the spotlight

It follows a Cork anti-water charges campaigner receiving a fine.

The spotlight is back on water charges Leeside today.

It comes after a Cork anti-water charges campaigner was yesterday fined €2,000 and ordered to pay €800 compensation after he was convicted of ten counts of criminal damages to water meters during a protest last year.

Brian Gould of Gurranebraher was also bound to the peace and ordered to be of good behaviour after he was convicted of the offences at Cork District Court yesterday - however the 64-year-old says he's innocent and he'll will be appealing the ruling.

Elsewhere Irish Water payment figures were released which revealed that less than half of households paid the first round of bills sent out by the utility - something which the government and Irish Water says represents an 'encouraging start to a long-term project'.

Opponents of water charges however say the figures are a victory for the campaign and speaking to RedFM News Right2Water campaigner Noreen Murphy says they'll be upping their efforts in the coming weeks.
